Anyone worth their weight in grapes will be familiar with natural wines by now. ‘Bubbly’, ‘fizzy’, ‘colourful’, ‘bursting with life’—a few years ago these were the terms being thrown around our favourite Melbourne and Sydney haunts as the furore around natural wines, organic wines, and bubbling pĂ©t-nats reached a popping point. Back then, you would have been forgiven if you dismissed the push towards natural wines as just the latest cool-kid trend that would fade out of the zeitgeist as quickly as it appeared.Â
Now, in 2025, almost six years after the conversation kicked off in full effect, we’re starting to see that natural wines weren’t a fad, but rather a whole new style of drink to add to our cellar rotation alongside our favourite pinot noirs, sauvignon blancs and rosĂ©s.Â
Of course, natural wine has been around a lot longer than since 2019. The making of wine without additives or preservatives was the original way of doing it, and only recently (in the scheme of things) has the complicated process for making the wines we know and love become standard.Â
These days though, choosing a natural wine from the bottle shop (or having one delivered) has become just as common a decision as opting for red or white—it’s all just a matter of what you feel like. And, when it comes to summer in a warmer climate country like Australia, we often choose the fruity, earthy, vivacious flavours of natural wine.Â
But, as the novelty of the trend starts to wear off, and we all become a bit more discerning, the question must be asked: what are the best natural wines in Australia in 2025? From sparkling pét-nats to rich orange wines, we’ve selected our favourites for when a standard merlot or riesling just isn’t going to cut it. Drink up.

What is pét-nat?
“PĂ©t-nats are crafted using the mĂ©thode ancestrale technique, where the primary alcohol fermentation occurs in a bottle, and no preservatives are used, hence the cloudy appearance,” Voyager Estate’s winemaker and winery manager, Travis Lemm, previously told Vogue Living.
“It seems old is new again, and pét-nat has made a comeback in the market, partially tied to a rise of popularity in a minimal intervention philosophy of winemaking.”
What should you look for when purchasing pét-nat?
“Great pét-nat should be a clean and crisp wine, without winemaking faults appearing,” explains Lemm. “It requires great quality fruit in pristine condition. It also takes careful attention to the fermentation process and ensuring the wine is bottled at the precise moment to get the right bubbles and avoid explosive bottles.”
